Background

  • Responding to the questions of our times

It is the duty of the humanities and social sciences to answer the questions posed by our times. The greatest achievements in the humanities and social sciences have been those that accurately understood the zeitgeist to present satisfying answers to the questions of their times.
There are many questions of our times that require responses from the humanities and social sciences. In a world where science and technology have come to govern all areas of life, an important role of the humanities and social sciences is to seek ways for humanity and society to continue progressing, without losing their way.
At the KAIST School of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences, we aim to break down the boundaries between science and technology and the humanities and social sciences, seeking the right path for humanity and society to move forward on in the post-AI era.

  • Humanity and society in the post-AI world?

The convergence of humanities and social sciences with science and technology is the overriding trend of our times that we cannot escape. The post-AI world that we face requires the creation of new knowledge and research fields through the convergence of humanities and social sciences with digital/computing/AI technology.
Just as the humanities and social sciences in the 20th century differed completely from that of the 19th century, the humanities and social sciences must seek new methodologies and communication structures on a whole new dimension in the 21st century.
Presenting new methodologies and communication structures for the humanities and social sciences through convergence with digital technologies in the 21st century post-AI era is the mission and vision of the KAIST Graduate School of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences.

  • Humanities convergence engineers, humanities and social science scholars with digital literacy

Digital technology permeates all parts of our everyday lives in the present. It would not be an exaggeration to say that smartphones have become a part of our bodies, going far beyond a simple tool of convenience.
Understanding humans and society of the present day would be next to impossible without understanding digital technology. Thus, scholars of the humanities and social sciences must have digital literacy, or the ability to use digital technology.
At the KAIST School of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences, we aim to train a new kind of intellectual, a “humanities convergence engineer”, equipped with insight from the humanities and social sciences alongside digital literacy for the digital era.

  • The KAIST School of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences will lead the way

KAIST has always been at the helm, providing direction for Korean society over the course of its history.
In the era of industrialization, KAIST drove the industrial development of Korea with innovations in science and technology. KAIST also drove innovation and change in Korean society and higher education, presenting the research university model, and then becoming the first Korean university to introduce the admission officer system and tenure review.
Now, KAIST is rising to the new challenge of the times - the innovation of the humanities and social sciences. The KAIST School of Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences promises to take the helm, forging paths yet to be explored in this new mission.
